As Chief Welfare Attorney, I have been proud to work, in the County’s partnership with Catholic Charities of the Syracuse Diocese, to support our Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Program. The URM program provides culturally and linguistically appropriate foster care to unaccompanied refugee children and youth. For years, Onondaga County stepped up to welcome children who are fleeing war-torn and violent areas in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central America. “I feel compelled to draw attention to the reality of child migrants, especially the ones who are alone. I ask everyone to take care of the young, who in a threefold way are defenseless: they are children, they are foreigners, and they have no means to protect themselves.” -Pope Francis, 2017 World Day of Migrants and Refugees Message, January 15, 2017

We are so fortunate to have a Mayor who understands the needs of our city.

At #CEOForecast - was given a survey report where community, government and business leaders were asked, “To what extent do you expect the following environmental factors will impact your business in 2020?”, and in response to “Social Forces: the impact of poverty and economic disparity in the regional community”, 69% (!) said they felt there would be “No Impact”. We need to raise awareness of the impact on our whole community when people are left behind because of structural barriers to entry and engagement.

Just wrapping up a typically packed day as Chief Welfare Attorney - Y board meeting at 7:30, McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Meeting at 9:30, preparing for a Family Court trial next week, Bar Association Board Meeting at noon, subpoenas, contracts, and trusts all afternoon. Always interesting and so grateful to be able to serve Onondaga County in so many ways!
